The Complete Guide to Coaching Girls Basketball The Complete Guide to Coaching Girls’ Basketball

“Coach Hatchell’s book is a must-read for every girls’ basketball coach. She is fantastic in every phase of the game, and I love watching her teams play.”—Roy Williams, head men’s basketball coach, University of North Carolina, and Associated Press Coach of the Year, 2006

What does it take to turn a good coach into a great one? You need to be a teacher, a motivator, a guru of X’s and O’s. Coach Sylvia Hatchell shows you how she manages all these roles and gives you her winning advice to creating a team of champions.

Head coach of the University of North Carolina’s women’s team, Coach Hathcell combines the Tar Heels’ longstanding tradition of basketball greatness with her personal dedication to guiding young women as she teaches you how to:

  • Communicate effectively to get peak performances from 11- to 18-year-old girls
  • Teach all the fundamentals of the game and run a productive, high-energy practice
  • Develop a formidable offense and tenacious defense
  • Master 75 of her favorite drills, ranging in difficulty from beginner to advanced

Customer Review: Very Helpful
I’ve been a player for years, but never a coach. This is a great book for the basics in coaching skills as well as everything else that comes with coaching - team dynamics, setting up try-outs, dealing with parents - you name it, it’s in there!
Customer Review: The Ideal tool for girls’ coaching
The only coaching book you may ever need! Coach Hatchell hasn’t left anything aside. From the psychology of young women and how to deal with it, to the most subtle nuances of coaching, it is all in there. Well illustrated, the explanations are easy to understand and the chapters are arranged in a logical way. I wish the photos would have been in full color instead of black & white but it would have made the book more expensive. I highly recommend it to anyone, whether you are a senior coach or just stepping in the field.

He is dribbling the basketball in front of his body, to the side of his body, between his legs, around the back, using both hands at the same time. He can handle the basketball just as effectively with his left hand as his right hand. You can tell that he has been working on his skills for a long period of time because of how confident he looks. In his message about the video, he describes that the video is just the beginning of his workout routine he performs EVERYDAY of the summer. The video was just the warm up. It was a very intense warm up. How does this relate to improving girls basketball skills? Mike Conley said that the video was a part of his everyday summer workout routine. Mike Conley knows the key to improving his game and reaching his goals. He did something everyday. To improve your skills do something everyday. Or do something consistently. I was known as a great shooter. But how did I become a great shooter? I did what Mike Conley said he did during the summer. I was …

He pretty much matched his steals from each of his first two years in only two-thirds the amount of games played. Coors Field also aided him in seemingly improving his plate discipline, and that factor in addition to the deep outfield allowed him to hit above .300 for the first time. He missed much of the second half with a sore quad, but that injury should not be a concern after an offseason to get healthy. As long as he stays in Coors Field, Taveras has huge upside and the potential to join the elite speedsters in the game.” Taveras ended the 2008 season leading the league in steals, but that is only half the story. His batting average dropped to near .250, and he didn’t show much of an on-base percentage for a Colorado player, either. Fantasy owners go into 2009 at a crossroads, as Taveras could lose playing time if he continues to hit like he did last season, but at the same time he easily led the league in stolen bases. The Rockies have turned over some of their roster to sav …

Even though the topic of this article relates to free throw shooting I mean to include three point shooting and field goal shooting whether it be jump shots or set shots or even hook shots. (A hook shot is pretty much the same as a jump shot except your body is at 90 degrees to the chest of the defender, even if it’s a one or two legged jump shot). The real reason for this article is that the information about free throw shooting or the shooting mechanics in general, that is or has been taught over the past generations obviously must not be very good because the revealing statistics prove this fact. As of the start of the 21st century you could lump the shooting statistics into the following pool. For example, the average high school team in the USA shoots around 65% from the free throw line, Colleges average around 68% and the professional players average a whopping 72% from the line. You can give or take one or two percentage points in either direction. But the point here is that on …
