As for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th pick; Larry Johnson, Steven Jackson, and Frank Gore seem to be front runners for these spots. This year has been a slow start for all 4 of these running backs. LT seems to not have the same swagger as he did last year as he ran all over defenses, also by receiving and throwing touchdowns. Steven Jackson has been injured for the majority of the year, but when he is healthy he is tearing up other defenses. Larry Johnson has not got his motor running yet this season due to a late start for him by opting out of training camp. Frank Gore started the year off on the same foot as he finished in the first two weeks this year, but has been in a slump lately. Not one of these running backs are leading in the top five for running backs. I believe that these running backs are just on a slight slump and mark my word that before the year is over they will all be on track to putting up similar numbers as last year, probably excluding LT surpassing his old record. Out of …

Sam Davis is a twelve-year-old boy with cerebral palsy. His father has abandoned him; his mother is too absorbed with her new boyfriend to notice Sam most of the time. In all this, his three beams of light are his prim, if talkative nurse, Miss Perkins, the imaginary voice of Winston “Winnie” Churchill, and the basketball court almost in his backyard. Sam gets the chance to go to school with the other children. At first it is a disaster but Winnie tells Sam to keep a stiff upper lip. Soon, as his teacher starts to understand him, Sam writes an essay on his hero, Winston Churchill, for a contest. On his twentieth and last day of school, he gets out the words to tell the captain of the basketball team to appoint Micky Kostov, a Russian boy no one likes, as point guard. Then he is taken to an institution by his mother who is leaving to Europe to marry her boyfriend. Sam starts to slowly fade away when the news reporter comes to take his picture and write an article about him. The essay h …

The list goes on and on. I’ve watched Coach Knight’s teams play throughout the years and studied his philosophy, but the thing that impresses me the most is his ability to teach kids how to play the game of basketball. The art of teaching college athletes the fundamentals of basketball sure doesn’t get much attention in this day and age. The media fixates on the top ranked point guard in this year’s senior class, the top player in 8th grade, or the list of current parade All-Americans. There are television programs, websites, camps, and publications dedicated to rating and ranking the best players. Assistant coaches scour the country (and the globe) to find the best athletes, but we often don’t hear much about the coaches who focus on the purity of the game of basketball. That’s why I like Bob Knight. Sure, his name pops up from time to time, but not for what he has contributed to the game of basketball on the court. If you’ve ever watched Coach Knight’s teams run their motion offense …

After repeated attempts to break free, the elephants become conditioned to believe that they can not break free. So they simply quit trying. As they grow and reach maturity, that same rope continues to hold the elephants in their place - despite the fact that the elephant could break free from their bond any time they wanted to. The elephant does not believe that it could break free, so it doesn’t even try. How many of us are stuck in a rut, weighed down with the belief that we can’t do something simply because out our outdated beliefs? How many of us refuse to attempt something new and challenging because of a limiting belief that we have? Or ever worse, a limiting belief that someone else may have? Author Napolean Hill said, “What the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” Kevin Saunders, Bronze Medal winner at the Para-Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, says, “There’s always a way. Never give up.” If you want something bad enough, you’ll figure our a way to get it. Nothing can …

So what is it that leads to happiness? It’s About Connections What makes an event memorable? It’s the connection you feel to either the place where you were at the time or the people who shared the event with you that make it truly memorable. It’s not a question of how much you spent, what you wore, or how you got there. Here’s an example: You eat every day. How many meals have you had in your life, as opposed to those that you remember in detail? If you stop to think about it, what separates the memorable meals from those that form part of the background of your life has to do with who you shared your food with, as opposed to what you ate. This is how it should be because if we don’t feel connected to each other, life is a pretty lonely place. Sharing Activities Together Makes for Great Connections Another way to make great memories with other people is to participate in an activity together. Have you ever participated in a team sport, like basketball? It’s amazing how working with o …
